Playful Design for Smart Cities

You are invited to attend the Playful Design for Smart Cities event.

The neglect of public spaces in cities around the world has led to serious consequences for city dweller’s quality of life. Research shows that disused and dysfunctional public places typically leads to higher crime rates (especially in disadvantaged neighbourhoods), fewer social interactions among different public segments, and lower physical activity overall. Unfortunately, the smart cities approach to date has generally focused more on improving levels of efficiency, control, and monitoring rather than on improving other aspects of liveability. Therefore, Playful Design for Smart Cities seeks to bring this issue to the public’s attention in an effort to overcome these hurdles.

The one-day workshop will focus on design, regulatory, and social impact issues surrounding urban play. The objectives of this workshop will be to map out the implications of the playful design approach, to foster a collaborative network of researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders, and to spin off concrete collaboration projects.

Guest participants on the day will include distinguished stakeholders such as municipal regulators, participants from the smart cities industry, urban designers, interaction designers, and non-governmental organisations within the commons movement. The workshop will be held at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) Europe in Barcelona on November 14th, just before the Smart City Expo in Barcelona.

Speakers for this event include Professor Floyd Mueller from RMIT University,  Professor Judith Ackerman from FH Potsdam, and Sebastian Quack and Gilly Karjevsky from Playful Commons.
